Mustangs Split Weekend Pair With Power In Milwaukee

Mustangs winning streak snapped at 9 games with Saturday night los

West Bend, WI – The Peoria Mustangs hit the road for their final trip of the regular season to West Bend, WI to face the Milwaukee Power for the 5th and 6th time this season. Friday night the Mustangs played catch up and got a late game tying goal to force overtime before Addy Powell netted the game winner just 12 seconds into the extra session. Saturday night the visitors couldn’t get any momentum and suffered just their 6th loss of the season by a 4-1 final score. With the weekend split the Mustangs sit 14-6-0, 28 standings points and third place in the Central Division.

Friday: PEO 4 – MKE 3 (OT)

Friday night the Mustangs fell behind by a pair of goals in the first period and battled their way back late to force overtime, where Addy Powell took all of 12 seconds to net the game winner off the opening face-off.

Milwaukee opened the scoring in the first period with a pair of goals one just prior to the midway point of the frame and the second after the 10-minute mark. Patrick Toomey lit the lamp at the 7:13 mark for a 1-0 Power advantage, and Tommy Kundinger doubled the lead with Milwaukee on a power play at 14:49, for a 2-0 Milwaukee edge.

Peoria got on the board in the closing minutes of the opening period with a power play tally of their own. The Mustangs were cycling the puck in their offensive zone when Chris Kodiles found Massimo Polistina streaking below the goal line. Polistina received the pass and spotted Ethan Chesney cutting down the slot and sent a pass towards Chesney, Chesney snapped the puck past Power goaltender Adam Prokop and into the back of the net cutting the Milwaukee lead to 2-1 at 18:03 of the first period.

After a scoreless middle frame, the Mustangs eventually tied the score at 2 each early in the final period of regulation. During a Mustangs line change Chris Kondiles corralled a lose puck and sent it into the high slot. The puck bounced off Perry Lgatuz’s stick, Lagatuz spun and corralled the puck and sent it net ward, the puck skipped past Prokow and into the back of the net for the 2-2 tie at 3:43 of the third period.

Milwaukee once again regained the lead just seconds past the midway point of the third period when Max Erstad netted a shorthanded tally at 10:14 for the 3-2 Power lead.

Peoria evened the score once again late in regulation when Addy Powell out a shot on goal, the puck twirled behind the goaltender and was brushed away by a Milwaukee stick, right to a streaking Jaycob Bland. Bland found the puck on the blade of his stick and whistled the puck past Prokow and into the back of the net tying the game at 3 each with 4:24 left in regulation and eventually sending the game into three-on-three overtime.

Peoria didn’t waste any time netting the game winner, off the face off the puck squirted to Addy Powell. Powell took the puck just inside his own blue-line and raced through neutral ice down the right-wing boards. Powell cut across the right circle and drove net ward and stuffed the puck under the leg pad of Prokow, into the back of the net for the 4-3 Mustangs victory at 12 seconds of overtime.

Joe Ambroffi earned the win between the pipes stopping 40 of 43 shots faced in the contest, the win, Ambroffi’s 5th straight improves the netminder to 7-1-0 on the season.

Saturday: PEO 1 – MKE 4

Saturday night Peoria fell behind by a trio of goals and couldn’t gain any momentum as they skated to just their 6th loss of the season and second road loss of the season.

Milwaukee opened the scoring just past the midway point of the opening period when Riley Planey tallied his 3rd goal of the season at the 12:26 mark for the 1-0 Power advantage.

The Power added a pair of goals in the middle frame building a 3-0 Lead heading into the second intermission, the first off, the stick of Matthew Ebersole on the power play at 18 seconds of the second period. Patrick Toomey added a power play goal of his own with a little over 5 minutes left in the period for the 3-0 Power edge at 15:04 of the second period.

Peoria go on the board in the early stages of the final period when Ethan Chesney raced up the left wing boards and into the Mustangs attacking end. Chesney spotted Perry Lagatuz cutting towards the net and sent a pass that Lagatuz accepted and snapped over the glove of Milwaukee goaltender Brett Holmer and into the back of the net at 6:01 cutting the Milwaukee lead to 3-1.

The Power added a goal late to seal the victory, Luke Nemeth lit the lamp for just the second time this season, for the eventual 4-1 final score.

Kason Yamada took the loss between the pipes, his first of the season, stopping 34 of 38 shots faced. With the loss, Yamada falls to 5-1-0 on the campaign.

Stable Notes:

-The Mustangs 4-1 loss on Saturday is just the second road loss of the season, both have been at the hands of Milwaukee.

-Jaycob Bland had a 10-game point streak snapped in Saturday night’s loss.

-With four total points on the weekend, Ethan Chesney has collected at least a point in 10-straight games and has 14 total points in his last 5 outings.

-For the second straight game, Peoria allowed the first goal, and fell behind by two or more goals.

-With the overtime game winner on Friday, blue-liner Addy Powell has his second game winning goal in 6 games with Peoria. Powell also collected his first multi-point game of the season Friday night.

-Perry Lagatuz has a goal in three straight games, and two power play tallies in that span.

What’s Ahead:

The Mustangs remain on the road as they embark on their first road trip to Rochester, MN this season. Peoria visits the Grizzlies December 2nd and 3rd, both games slated for a 7:05 puck drop. All games can be viewed on HockeyTV or by following along on Mustang social media platforms.
